The school was born from our vision to run a Christian primary school. It is a registered charity governed by Christian
trustees from local churches. It was registered as a school in September 2003. Its nursery provision has been inspected
several times by Ofsted’s Children’s Services, last time in February 2008. The nursery is registered for a total of 28 children in the Early Years age group. There are currently 10 pupils on
the school’s roll; with the school accepting children from Reception class age through to Year 6. Pupils come from
a variety of backgrounds as Potters House has an inclusive admissions policy, accepting children from all faiths and none.
Potter's House - The Story
Mike and Mary Mitchell first heard about independant Christian Education while away on a housegroup weekend in 1990 in the Lake District. There they heard Sylvia Baker speak on the subject - she had travelled from Greater Manchester (as they had!) to address a group of people who were interested in starting their own school. Strangely, they never did but God gave Mike and Mary a vision of starting one in Bury. A divine appointment! It took some time for them to pray and seek God about the venture, and for Mary to extricate herself from her job (Mike joined school sometime later). Mary, at that time was a deputy headteacher at a residential school for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties (aged 7- 16) and Mike a high school maths teacher.
A Romanian friend was praying for the venture and felt that God was saying to choose the name The Potter's House in accordance with the passage in Jeremiah ch18 verses1-6 "Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause you to hear my words." This was exactly what they wanted the school to represent : God, whose words would be heard! The rest, as they say, is history - the full story may one day be written down to display all the wonderful things God has done in and through the school. Mike and Mary would be only too happy to tell of them, you only need to ask. Below, you can read the memorial stones that give a very brief outline of event that have taken place so far, but they do not tell of the life changing experiences of staff and children who have been and still are part of the Potter's House family.
Based on the Memorial Stones in Joshua chapter 4 vs. 2-7
“Choose 12 men from among the people, one from each tribe. Tell them to get twelve rocks …and put them down where you stay tonight…..they will be a sign among you. In the future your children will ask you “What do these rocks mean?”
